Do Security Guards Need High-Powered Guns?

The new gun law in New South Wales will now allow security guards to be able to carry high- powered guns. Last Christmas 2009, news of these new laws were disclosed and just two weeks ago, the NSW Greens attempted to put a stop to it. Their reasoning is that the new law will also permit international visitors to easily get firearms license, without much restrictions. They also disapprove that security guards be allowed to use restricted firearms and shotguns.

For the Greens especially their MP Lee Rhiannon, the law softens its control on who can hold and own firearms. It may have an unintentional consequence like unwarranted use leading to physical injuries or death.

There is really no need for security guards to have powerful guns, the likes of which were used in massacres. Their job is on safety and protection not really so much in defense, as if they will get involved in combat.

The law stipulates that a security guards can ask for authorization from a Police Commissioner so that they will have access to these high-powered firearms.

On the other hand, the Shooters Party as represented by their MP Roy Smith, believes that the law is needed. He further adds that security guards may need such high caliber weapons since they are dealing with matters of security. Enforcing is easily accomplished given the right firearms to deter or scare would be criminals.

The security industry has long been limited by gun laws that control their access to firearms. The government now feels that security guards who have the proper license can manage all types of firearms. The opposition through Mike Gallacher, thinks that security guards assigned in banks or in transporting large sums of money or valuable assets should be the ones given access to high powered firearms. Their particular job requires the most stringent vigilance and perhaps the highest risk since money and valuables are prime targets for theft. These days, criminals use very sophisticated gadgets and high caliber weapons. To be effective in their job, the security guards must be equally and properly armed.

Furthermore, the Greens highly suspect the motive of the state government in introducing the new laws. It is an attempt to get on the good side of the two Shooters Party MPs.

The disadvantage with security guards holding high-powered firearms is that they could now be targets by gun robbers.
